It is presumed that already Celts and Romans used the 70 m high, elliptical rocky cliff. First a small wooden castle, perhaps as a refuge, was built in the 9th or 10th century. Between the 11th and the 13th century, the castle was built of stone. Its location guaranteed succsessful trading between the regions of the Eifel, Mosel and Maifeld and a good turnover.
Many guests, emperors, crown princes, electors, grand dukes came to visit the castle. Even the famous English painter William Turner painted the castle Eltz in different views.
The Archbishop and elector Balduin von Trier and Luxembourg besieged the castle Eltz with other free knights from the area. They built the fortress Trutzeltz and besieged the castle Eltz for two years until they had to give up.
