A day without wine is like a day without sunshine

One degree Oechsle has about 2 grams of sugar. That determines later  the taste and the possible alcohol level. Here is an excerpt from the minimum must weights:

Quality wine: 51 - 72 degrees Oechsle
Hochgewächs: 60 - 70 degrees Oechsle
Cabinet: 70 - 82 degrees Oechsle
Spätlese: 76 - 90 degrees Oechsle
Auslese: 83 - 100 degrees Oechsle
Eiswein (ice wine) / Beerenauslese (berry selection): 110 - 128 degrees Oechsle
Trockenbeerenauslese (dry berry selection): 150 - 154 degrees Oechsle
At the Moselle and elsewhere it is common for winemakers to set higher standards by naming their wines with high degree Oechsle.
